2020 was the year I rediscovered the country I grew up in: Belgium. With travel restrictions keeping me close to home, I set out to explore the southern part of the country, known for its rolling hills, medieval towns, and hidden natural gems.
In this post, I’ll take you through five of my favorite places in Southern Belgium, each one offering a perfect mix of nature, history, and adventure.
Fondry des Chiens: The “Grand Canyon” of Belgium
Located near Nismes, Fondry des Chiens is one of Belgium’s most striking geological formations. Carved by millions of years of rain erosion, its limestone cliffs rise dramatically above the landscape.
Tip: Combine your visit with one of the scenic hikes starting from Nismes. They’re well-marked and offer fantastic views of the surrounding nature.

Villers Abbey: History among ruins
The Abbaye de Villers in Villers-la-Ville dates back to the 12th century and is one of the country’s most impressive monastic ruins.
Wander among the Gothic arches and ivy-covered walls, and don’t forget to explore the walking trails around the site — they offer peaceful forest views and picnic spots.

Durbuy: The smallest city in the world
Durbuy may be small in size, but it’s big on charm. This medieval town is perfect for a day trip filled with cobbled streets, cozy cafes, and local boutiques. For the active traveler, there’s plenty to do nearby: hiking, kayaking on the Ourthe River, mountain biking, or even ziplining in the adventure park.

Rocher du Hérou: A hiker’s dream
For those seeking a bit of adventure, the Rocher du Hérou offers steep trails, stunning river views, and a real sense of wilderness.
The site lies within the Natural Park of the Two Ourthes and is one of Belgium’s most scenic hiking spots. Climb to the top of the rocky ridge for an unforgettable panorama over the Ourthe River valley.

Château de Walzin: The cliffside castle
Few places in Belgium are as dramatic as Kasteel van Walzin. Perched high on a limestone cliff above the Lesse River, the castle looks like it belongs in a fairy tale.
Tip: Paddle down the Lesse River by kayak to enjoy the best views from below — or hike up for a closer look at the fortress.

Whether you’re into hiking, history, or hidden gems, the south of Belgium has something for everyone. Remember: always stay respectful towards nature and heritage sites — keep dogs on a leash, don’t litter, and enjoy responsibly.
