I always thought I needed to cross the border to find challenging hikes, real hills, and breathtaking nature. Turns out I was wrong. My friend and I recently hiked what has now become my (new) favorite trail in the Belgian Ardennes. Of course, I want to share this experience with you so you can enjoy this scenic route too! 🌲
The nature site Le Hérou offers a mix of trail challenge, silence and stunning vistas. The cherry on top? Climbing up to the top of the Rocher du Hérou: a dramatic rock formation jutting into the meanders of the Ourthe River. Hike up and you’ll be rewarded with landscapes you might expect in the Alps.
The rock is located in Parc naturel des Deux Ourthes (Natural Park of the Two Ourthes) which is near the village of Nadrin in the province of Luxembourg, Belgium.

A bit of background
- The rock formation is about 1.4–1.5 km long and rises some 80 m or more above the river.
- It’s listed as a protected site by the Wallonia region (since 1937) for its unique geology and landscape.
- The entire natural park was created in 2001 and covers the valleys of the two branches of the Ourthe.
Our route & what we loved
We parked near Nadrin (by the church) since we were travelling by van. From there we made our way down to the Ourthe river, then followed trails marked by a series of blue wavy signs that led us directly to the Rocher du Hérou. Without much plan, we ended up walking a solid ~ 8 km loop and absolutely loved it.
Tip: The rock faces and paths can become quite slippery after rain: waterproof shoes and good grip are a must.

The area
The area is known for its challenging trails and rewarding viewpoints and Rocher du Hérou definitely lives up to that! The climb can be demanding at times, so take it slow, stay safe, and make sure to bring enough water and snacks. Remember, hiking is not just about reaching the destination it’s about enjoying the journey, the sounds of the forest, and the calm that comes with being out in nature.
Practical Information
| Getting there | I recommend parking near the park or somewhere close by like Nadrin. Getting there by public transportation is possible but not ideal as there’s no train station nearby, though a bus might take you to Nadrin. |
| Budget | Entering the park is free. |
| Time & distance | There are plenty of hikes to and from Rocher du Hérou. There are shorter (~3.5 km) and longer (~9.5 km) loop options. |
| Trail difficulty | Moderate to difficult. Some steep, rocky sections; chains or ropes in places. Best visited in dry weather. |
| Bring along | Enough water, snacks, and waterproof hiking shoes. |
This hike at Rocher du Hérou is a perfect blend of challenge, nature and reward. If you’re in Belgium and looking for a trail that feels like a “real” nature break this might just be it 🇧🇪
Kind reminder: Always stay respectful towards nature & heritage sites. Keep your dog on the leash, don’t litter, stay on the path. ✌️
