A Natural Getaway from the City

Valparaíso’s colorful hills, street art, and bustling port life make it one of Chile’s most charming coastal cities. But sometimes, even the most vibrant destinations call for a break in nature. Just 40 minutes from Valparaíso, the Salto del Agua waterfall in Curauma offers that perfect escape: quiet forest trails, fresh air, and the soothing sound of falling water.

Even better? It’s completely free to visit.

Getting there

Reaching Salto del Agua is simple and budget-friendly. From Sotomayor Square in Valparaíso, hop on one of the following buses heading towards Curauma:

  • Bus 001, 002, or 901 (you can verify current numbers on Google Maps).

Ask the driver to drop you off near Avenida Curauma Norte or at the main roundabout in Curauma. From there, follow the road toward Parque Curauma, where the trail to the waterfall begins.

Tip: Download the MAPS.ME app before you go. It shows all the trails clearly. Search for “Salto del Agua” within the app to follow the right path.

Depending on your arrival time you could decide to walk along the lake and then walk towards the waterfall, or immediately head there. There are two ways to enjoy the site, depending on how adventurous you’re feeling:

  • Option 1 The Viewpoint: The trail to the viewpoint is an easy, scenic walk through the park. You’ll reach a platform that overlooks the falls and surrounding greenery, ideal if you prefer a relaxed visit or are short on time.
  • Option 2 The Base of the Waterfall: For those craving a challenge, you can descend to the base of the falls. Be warned: the path is steep, rocky, and can get slippery. You’ll need to use tree roots and rocks for balance, and the climb back up is a real workout. It’s not recommended for inexperienced hikers, but if you’re up for it, the reward is a refreshing close-up view of the waterfall surrounded by untouched forest.

In order to get back to Valparaiso, you’ll have to head back to the main road and the roundabout. There, you can take several buses back. Just check with the driver.
